Facebook Kidney Pages

Here are links to Facebook Kidney pages, check them out! Help share their stories and get some ideas on how to share yours.  These pages helped me out greatly when we first started Calling All Kidneys.  Contact the page owners who will answer your questions and be able to share how they have gone about this.  For those considering donation, we welcome you as well….most living donors are willing to share their experiences.

  1. This is wonderful! Only rare people have the feeling of “giving back” and this is certainly one of the best examples. It was nice to see the page I created for my nephew appearing on your list. Although we are still in search for his “Newbie” I too have been blessed with the feeling of “giving back” As being ruled out as a donor I plan to bring awareness as well as volunteer my services. Keep up the good work and thank you!

  2. As a living kidney donor myself, I understand these family’s situations. However, I wonder how many truly understand what they’re asking someone to do for them.

4.4 living kidney donors die every year in the US w/i 12 months of surgery.

20% experience complications: nerve damage, adrenal dysfunction, chylous ascities, pancreatitis, etc.

20-30% experience depression, anxiety and PTSD. Not a single transplant center offers aftercare or support services.

There are no national standards of LD evaluation, selection or treatment. Every hospital makes up their own rules and is accountable to no one.

There is NO comprehensive data on LDs health and well- being. In 2000, the Sec of Health mandated one yr of follow-up on all LDs (two yrs as of 2006) yet a decade later, 30% are still reported ‘lost’ by one year. OPTN’s data task force concluded their database to be ‘woefully inadequate’ and useless for analysis or research. Meanwhile, all published studies (including Ibrahim and Segev) are single-center, have small sample sizes or are subject to selection bias.

A kidney is not a pint of blood. The public should never be regarded as walking medical supply. Transplant recipients and bone marrow donors have national registries to ensure their future health. Why don’t living organ donors?

    • Christy,
Thank you for your comments. I do agree that there needs to be improvements for living donors in the form of advocates, and that any potential living donor should be doing their own research to realize the risks involved. Living donors should be treated and followed much better. Living Donors are Rockstars and should be treated as one!
      Mike

  3. I just wanted to let you guys know I’ve started a page for those wishing for organ donations. Feel free to join, post wishes for organ donation, resources, encouragement, stories, etc. I am trying to get the word out there about the desperate need for living donors. I will be adding more wishes from the site as time allows.
